14 - 30 June, 2012 Guildford Castle Grounds
Summer 2012 Diamond Jubilee, Olympics, Wimbledon and Euro Football, the months of June, July and August 2012 were bursting with bunting, colour and national pride like never before, and at GSC we chose to honour that feeling with two of Shakespeare's sunniest and funniest comedies. Though very different, The Merry Wives of Windsor and A Midsummer Night's Dream are both glorious celebrations of the power of laughter, of being part of a community, and of the magic of theatre itself.
After Hamlet and Richard III, director Caroline Devlin took her first steps outdoors with GSC this summer and gave us a rollicking good 1950s-set romp. Shakespeare's gutsy, laugh-out-loud comedy, which has inspired so many of our most popular British sit-coms, was brought to life with our trademark sense of fun and invention. A picture-perfect homage to 1950s domesticity was provided by designer Sarah Bacon's fabulously colourful set and costumes.
With a toe-tapping 1950s soundtrack and dancing to match, GSC regulars Jo Murdock, Alex Scott Fairley, Matt and Sarah were joined by a gallery of brand new faces, including 3 graduating students from GSA.
